About
We promote healthy activities and lifestyles. This means either changing how we use the Internet and play games, or reducing our tech use. Abstinence is a possible goal, but we don't assume that members are trying to reduce their tech use.
Group Norms & Guidelines
This is a space for conversation and support around Internet and gaming addiction and recovery, held by and for people who have struggled with problem technology use. The group is focused on open discussion and has different norms and guidelines than a 12-step group.
General guidelines: Our meetings will involve different types of discussion, some of them grounded in personal experience and others more abstract or ideas-based. Topics may be intellectual, emotional, or both. Regardless of topic, please refrain from commenting on others’ personal experiences unless explicitly invited to do so. Direct advice-giving to a specific person should only be done if they’ve asked for advice or input on a personal challenge.
Treat everyone and the space with respect: We assume that everyone who comes to meetings is here because they would like support and are offering support in return. We also trust in the good faith participation of everyone involved. Still, we stress that respect is a crucial component of this support space. Don’t insult, belittle, criticize, interrupt, or otherwise disrespect other members of the group.
Active participation is optional: Everyone is encouraged to participate but no one is required to -- each person is welcome to simply listen to the conversation. We recognize that simply showing up to meetings takes its own type of dedication and courage, and is a perfectly fine way of participating.
Confidentiality is key: The purpose of the group is to provide each member with support, strategies, and insight they can take away from the group, but we still want to respect privacy and confidentiality. Personal or identifying information must remain in the group. If you are ever in doubt about what can and cannot be shared, check in with the relevant person(s) before making any decisions on your own.
Avoid glamorizing: Discussing specifics about games, websites, communities, or habits is okay. But we have committed not to use this space to glamorize or create excitement around games. We want to encourage people in their journeys away from gaming and tech addiction, not reinforce it by glamorization of those activities.
Urges or urgent issues: If you are feeling triggered, having urges, or something urgent arises for you, you are welcome to bring it to the attention of the group, ask an individual for support, or step out of the space if needed. We’re here to help each other, but won’t necessarily know if something’s going on internally unless you communicate it in some way.
